Day 12

That’s right. Do what you do best. Disengage.
There was a lot of soft slamming. Probably bags of clothing.
Fine. Because of you I’ll just end up getting bit on my other leg.
More soft slamming.
Silence.
Then he started reading a book. And then they traded chapters. Reading out loud.
First we tried to choke down our church giggles since their tent was just next to our camp. After hours of it, we just wanted them to die from mosquito bites.
Your goats aren’t loud at night, are they? was the only thing he’d said to us when they arrived. Out of a whole lake, they were worried that out goats might be too loud, but they camped right next to us and now this?
We’d counted the goat feed. We have fourteen pounds left. We wanted sixteen to get through Desolation Wilderness, so that’s just about perfect. We also counted our own meals. We have enough food to get to the next resupply, but no extra. No eating just for fun. Or for boredom. Or for stress.
So with our snappy neighbors, that’s how we ended a glorious day off. A day full of charging electronics. A day full of trying to make my family un-upset about my swollen arm which had healed quite a bit overnight. A day full of swimming and washing our hair in a bucket and taking the goats to forage. A day full of sunshine and naps and recovering.
A day full of life.

I would have absolutely told them the goats are VERY LOUD at night and they should probably move.
