Vitamin C and The Bickering

The people are growing weary. Weary of fear and anxiety.

We’ve collectively gone through shock and denial. Now many moved on to anger and bargaining. They’re protesting in state capitals, demanding quarantine restrictions lifted. They’re hollering and blocking streets with their cars and waving American flags and saying the economic toll is too much. They’re tired.

They’re following the President’s lead. And not wearing masks. And insisting there is nothing to fear. And only thinking of The Almighty Dollar.

Eat Vitamin C, they holler. Keeping safe is up to the individual, the scream.

They are weary, so they drank the kool-aid.

But limiting the spread of the coronavirus and saving lives is the most important consideration for governors. There still aren’t enough tests. People are weary of not enough tests. The federal government is pitting the states against each other and then buying PPE out from under those very states. And then blaming the governors for not trying hard enough. And people are weary of The Bickering.

Depression is next. Once the virus comes back in force because of these folks who are defying social distancing and quarantine, depression will set in. And maybe then acceptance will follow? Will it ever follow?

It’s tough though, right? Because so many haven’t seen the disease. They don’t know anyone who has it. Because the measures in place are working. It’s an invisible solution. And people want the economy reopened. The decline of their cities and towns and their bank accounts are the only thing that’s obvious and affecting them.

The statistical value of a human life is 3 million dollars. So now the economic calculations kick in.

Is it cheaper to open the economy and let people die, or keep them safe with the economy suffering?

My life is worth is invaluable.

So are the lives of everyone I know and everyone I love.

And so are the lives of everyone I’ve never met.
