Day 15
Miles 9
I’ve never gone longer than ten days without a shower. I’m pretty well Maxed Out. Even with the wash-hair-in-the-bucket routine the other day…I just cannot stand to catch a whiff of myself.
We marched out of camp and up to the top of Dick’s Pass. The views were stunning from every side, but even better…I had enough reception to call my sweet husband and hear his voice. It’s always amazing to hear the sounds of home. Our puppy ate his glasses.
Completely Decimated.
And I wish I were there to hug him and then laugh together.
I wonder as I walked down the miles of downhill, over awkward shaped stones that toss your foot around this way and that. I wonder, how much goat hair have I eaten on accident on this trip. How many times will we race around to secure tarps before it rains, but then it never rains.
I wonder if the boys will love us more or less when this is all over.
I wonder if we’re the first people ever to complete the Tahoe Rim Trail with Pack Goats.
The views hurt my eyeballs they were so pretty and the ground slammed rock after rock into the tender parts of my feet until I found myself staring more at the ground than at the scenery.
We’re entering dog territory again. I asked one guy if his dog were leashed and he said, “Are your goats leashed?” and turned into Mr. Attitude Father of Three Children.
We took a long, long break under some small trees when we finally made it to Lake Aloha. We knew there wouldn’t be any camp spots for another 1.5 miles, but the boys were wiped out.
Once it threatened rain, we got them up and moving for the last stretch. Past two unleashed dogs. Past twelve more PCT hiker trash. Past naked people and fisher people and hiker people and people with floaties.
We found a nice area above everything else. We didn’t set up the tarps, and it didn’t rain.
Sophie set up an interesting configuration of the fence so we each have a private area on opposite sides of the boys. Neither of us really have a view, but that’s the price you pay to travel with the Goateo. And we don’t mind a bit.
