Day 58
PCT Mile Marker 1716.19 – 1727.58
Miles Hiked 11.39
All that food fit into three medium priority mail boxes. I’d unpackaged everything I could, removing it from cardboard boxes, getting rid of extra bulk, splitting stuff into ziploc bags and labeling them with my sharpie.
This Is How We Do It.
I successfully mailed it all UPS and USPS so I have food for the rest of the state of Oregon. My Mom is going to bring me a resupply in Crater Lake.
Then I have nothing to worry about until Washington.
I ate a bunch of food in my room, and then it was time to hitchhike.
I used my amazing ‘Hiker To Trail’ sign and got a hitch from the second truck that came along.
Almost right away there was a blue cooler with a sign. Trail Magic! I didn’t take any though, since I’d just left town.
The trail seemed really hard, and I was soaked with sweat. It was a hot afternoon, and I kept thinking about the two beers I’d packed out from town. Turtle said he might be on trail later in the afternoon, so I’d brought one for him in case he caught up with me.
Riiiiiipppp!!! Said my little pad when it caught on the barbed wire fence as I was going through a gate.
Booooo. I said, super bummed.
The Butler was my maddening little companion for most of the afternoon, so I listened to an audio book and sweated profusely to try to block out his presence.
Leaving Town Is Heavy Business.
I could have hiked for longer, but I found a piped spring. The water was cool and clear, and there was a beautiful spot for my little tent.
I ate my dinner and looked out over the meadow and the little pond in the fading light, and happily drank my beer.
I waited until 8:30, and then I drank Turtle’s beer too.
