Day 14
Miles 5.5
Trit-trot-trit-trot went the boys’ feet as they went along the soft paths. The terrain was all over the place. Forest, Giant Boulders, Alpine Forest, then Alpine Lakes. Breathtaking and Blue and Unbelievable.
Tiny bits of snow hanging on for dear life way, way above on towering sharp mountainsides of pure rock.
No such thing as a bad photo here. Even a crooked, blurry one would look great blown up on your wall.
We lost the path twice, which was understandable since it wandered around on rock, after all.
There was A Fjord of a Lake Outlet. Bigger than the boys had ever seen. By a lot. Sophie made it across no problem. Bosco watched her go and followed her footsteps. No one else could figure it out. Oatcake thought he’d find a better way and got himself stranded on a rock out in the middle of the stream with deep water on either side. Jon Snow took a different route and was in front of him. Jon Snow doesn’t mind water much and had a pretty light load, so he jumped to the far bank and just got his back end a little wet. Oatcake decided that wasn’t for him and jumped…into much deeper water and then leaped out on the other side. A beached whale. He looked completely surprised. Sophie got the whole thing on video.
I crossed where Sophie did, but right in the middle, on a log, Sharkey decided to pass me and almost knocked me into a deep pool. Somehow, we both made it to the other side without getting wet.
We were all so proud.
We took victory photos.
And immediately lost the trail again.
My Hunger Pains really got to me today. We decided to pull nine miles tomorrow and six the next to get out of Desolation Wilderness a day early. It’s so beautiful here but my hunger is overwhelming.
Once that decision was made, I no longer had to ration for an extra day. I ate until I was full.
