Day 35

Miles Hiked 0

Today was the day for tubing and kayaking. The water was really reedy and had some old cow patties around the edges, but it looked like it might be clear and cold out in the middle of the reservoir.

Some of us decided to go for it.

We created a flotilla with the tubes and headed out on our adventure. Pretty quick, the wind blew us all the wrong way in spite of our attempts to use the giant sun umbrella as a sail.

So Tom had to rescue us by tying us to his kayak and pulling us back on course.

If Tom were on trail, I would’ve named him Coast Guard.

We finally reached an island in the middle of the reservoir, and Budweisers were handed around. We looked at the beer, temporarily named ‘America’, and held it aloft in a cheers to the Fourth of July.

“I’m Gonna America The Shit Outta This,” Ben said.

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“I have no idea,” Ben Grinned.

Ben took a turn pulling the flotilla around with his kayak for a while and we visited several other islands.

Then we headed back through the cow-patty-laden, algae-filled, warm, reedy reservoir.

Pewww! Went the water spiders as we flicked them off the rafts and off our legs. And then we returned to our volcanic-dust-ridden-camp, hoping no one ended up with a rash.

Okay, so not really the experience we were anticipating.

But we got to America The Shit Outta the whole day.
