Day 20
Miles 6
When there was service, I had a text from a California Highway Patrol Officer saying they would help us cross Highway 89 and to text if we were early or late. I was so worried about getting to the road on time that we sped too fast. We hurried our way through the cool forest with the soft floors and up giant inclines made of hard packed sand. We saw the first mountain bikers we’d seen in quite some time, but they were respectful. We saw runners who said they’d been trying to figure out what animals they’d been following for miles.
And all of a sudden we were at the Highway. I texted The Officer again to let him know we were early.
The Officer stopped on the road and came into the woods to talk to us. He said the would text me when they were slowing traffic and that’s when we should start to go. They’d chirp their sirens when they were getting closer so we’d know where they were.
And that’s exactly what happened. The goats were mostly calm since they never saw the traffic. Bosco did turn to think about running after the cop car when he passed by, but Sophie stepped on his lead and pretty soon he was distracted by something else.
At the campground, we met Stacy who offered to share her spot with us because the campground was full. She had a large site just right for the six of us. We set up the highline just in time for it to start raining. We threw the tarps over the boys since there was no time to properly set them up. They were so good, sitting under those tarps. Bosco peeking his head out from under the corner to keep an eye on things.
Aidan and Jennie were there soon after with milkshakes and fries and a burger for Sophie.
Burger Time.
And then it went ahead and rained some more. And we all sat in the rain and did our resupply and gave the goats calf manna and vitamins and minerals and drank our milkshakes and laughed a lot.
And then Mom showed up too – to check on the goats and to give The Best Hugs In The Universe. Plus she brought strawberries and grapes and electrolyte drinks.
And then it went ahead and rained some more.
My sweet husband left and then my sweet Mom left and my sweet Jennie stayed to hike with us for a few days.
And the goats are healthy and happy, and so is my heart.
